Basement Membrane Extract-free Database Launched by the 3Rs Centre Utrecht
ππ― π·πͺπ΅π³π° innovations, like organoids and pluripotent stem cells, are transforming biomedical research. Yet many of these innovative methods still rely on animal-derived materials. Basement Membrane Extract (BME), like Matrigel, is one of such materials. BME has been widely used for over 40 years in 2D and 3D cell cultures to support cell growth and differentiation. But there are various ethical, sustainability, practical and scientific concerns associated with the use of BME.
The 3Rs Centre Utrecht (3RCU) launched the Basement Membrane Extract-free Database, supported by Proefdiervrij, where you can find curated alternatives to BME for your research. You can access the database via https://bme-free.sites.uu.nl/
Did you know that every 10 mL bottle of BME requires the sacrifice of two mice? These mice are purpose-bred and injected with Engelbreth-Holm-Swarm (EHS) tumours, causing them to experience suffering. This process is not only inhumane, but also unsustainable, requiring a lot of resources for breeding, housing, and maintaining facilities for these animals. The 3RCU started a weekly LinkedIn campaignΒ to highlight reasons for switching to defined, animal-free alternatives. Check out their LinkedIn page to stay tuned for more insights into the limitations of BME and why itβs time for a change!
